How to choose a specialization

The first and foremost thing in choosing a specialization is about your interest and passion in that management vertical to you want to choose and prosper. Understanding one's personality, strengths and weaknesses is a must while making choice of specialization.
There is no shortcut for success. The faithful combination of the specialization and the associated industry or sector makes a difference in terms of individual success. But let us be honest to ourselves that it will require considerable hard work to succeed for any specialization we choose.
In Management, People often go with specializations driven by the trends currently available in the market. But anything which has a seasonality feature will always have to face the other side of the coin . It is all about up’s and down’s in the Industry. Considering our career, what we specialize in should have a long term perspective and should possess good number of opportunities of employability and sustainability.
Students should deeply analyze the subjects and certifications that are covered under each specialization. Your observation at a minute level will help both in choosing the right specialization, developing specific skill set required for the current industry needs.

Internship at ISTTM

Introduction

Even the best PGDM/MBA degree from the most prestigious business school assumes little importance if the skills you learnt in the classroom are not applied in the real world of business. As a result, the value of vocational experience for PGDM/MBA students and recent graduates cannot be emphasized enough. Often, this vocational experience is through the form of MBA internships.
Internships can often act as a launchpad to an employment. Indeed, utilizing internship opportunity is an important part of the business school experience for many students.
The summer break between the first and second year is the conventional internship break.
Beside gaining an employment after the internship, internship opportunities offer students valuable insights into an industry or job function as well as hand’s on experience which makes you stand unique in the market– allowing them to judge whether or not a role could be the one they were cherishing when they have thought of their PGDM/MBA programme.
Internship opportunities at business schools
The importance of the internship experience is reflected in business schools’ employment reports. For example at ISTTM, We have 80% of the students who have undergone internships at various MNCs have secured jobs and being inducted in the same organisation after the completion of the course. More over Organisations are seeing for an employee who is job ready and want to spend less on the training of fresher candidates. An intern is a better choice than a fresher who requires training. Hiring interns gives employers strong opportunities to identify the right candidate from the talent pool.

Business schools will always be keen to expand and build their networks of employers because it enables PGDM/MBA students to draw from a rich vein of internship opportunities. This, in turn, allows them to keep the skills required by the industry and update their curriculum in their PGDM/MBA program accordingly.

Understanding the difference between PGDM and MBA.

PGDM Vs MBA

PGDM is an acronym for “Post Graduate Diploma in Management”. The confusion here is with the term Diploma. Many students are of the view that it is a Diploma course and not a Degree. When an Institute is an autonomous body (meaning it is not affiliated to any University) and conducts management courses then such Institutes cannot offer MBA degree instead, they can offer PGDM. IIMs, XLRI's doesn't offer MBA degrees and they give PGDM as they are autonomous. On similar lines AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) is allowing approved colleges to run a PGDM courses. Some Business Schools offering this AICTE PGDM course need not be autonomous, the PGDM course will be autonomous given by the Institute & directly approved by AICTE, Ministry of HRD, Govt of India and has nothing to do with any affiliation with regional universities or University Grants Commission (UGC).
University Grants Commission controls the Universities in India and AICTE - All India Council for Technical Education has control on both technical and management courses and especially colleges not under any affiliation with Universities. Even colleges offering UGC recognized MBA Programmes in most cases should have AICTE approval too.

Advantage of Institute’s Autonomy
When an Institute is autonomous, they can design their own curriculum based on employability of students in industry and update their syllabus quiet often.Affilitated institutes should follow the syllabus that is prescribed by Universities and hence the syllabus is quiet outdated as it changes usually every 3 or 5 years.
Hence one can say that PGDM courses are more Industry relevant, up to date as compared to MBA courses. However University MBA Programmes too are of value, it totally depends on the University one wish to do MBA.
Equivalence of PGDM with MBA

Not necessarily that a PGDM is equal to MBA because if PGDM is to be an equivalent to MBA then the college offering the PGDM course must have accreditation from AIU (The Association of Indian Universities) and AIU issues an equivalence of your PGDM course with MBA.
Various common national level tests to get into the finest B-Schools of India are:
